Anyone have an opinion on this?
Well, I think it works because most other works mentioned in this game, are not 'homotonal' like Haydn's La Passione. They have middle movements that are not in G major. Ravel for example, has his slow movement in E major. The Classicists invariably have theirs in the subdominant key (C major in this case) or the relative minor key (E minor in this case). So, if you think of the individual variations in the Bach as 'movements', - it doesn't matter what key they are in as far as this game is concerned. G major and G minor are parallel keys and have the same tonic anyway.
