I think the chief attraction of that set (which at one time was often considered first choice along with the Santini) is the conducting by Serafin, which I find to be lyrical and dramatic irrespective of the tempi or attitudes in speed which he takes. He shapes the music and makes the best possible case for Puccini's masterpiece. I don't know that Karajan will necessarily win, this one is ahead at the moment.

It's obvious, but ultimately there is only one Tosca:

    CD
6p De Sabata La Scala 53

    DVD
    6p Pappano ROH 2010? - Gheorgiu/Kaufmann/Terfel

    CD

    6p De Sabata

    DVD

    Callas/Gobbi Covent Garden 1964

Yes I know it’s only Act II, but it’s so good I can’t watch any other. This is what opera should be - but rarely is.

    dvd - pappano/gheorghiu/kaufmann/terfel - 6p

occasionally, my favorite audio version is a rip of a dvd version that i stick in my itunes--this is such a case. as with everyone else, i love gobbi and callas in the de sabata, but unlike most, i strongly dislike di stefano's cavaradossi, where i think kaufmann has a uniquely great characterization for the role. so i like around 1.5 acts of the de sabata, but i prefer the audio for the pappano for listening to the entire opera, even if i don't like gheorghiu or terfel quite as much as callas or gobbi.
