I have been using the HD650 for a long time (got them 50% off original price) and am pretty happy with it... only when there is a lot of background noise I wish they would seal a bit better... but they are open back ... so I should not complain....

For closed I use the old HD280Pro... they have though a little dry sound signature compared to the HD650... reason why I have stated looking at the Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro. I just balk at the price though...

As far as sound... I am debating whether I will even listen to them or just send them back.
Hmm! Mine came in a sturdy black box with metal hinges, and I have no problems with the quality of the headphones themselves.

So either you have higher standards than I do or they are counterfeit...?

I have read on line that the new production runs are not the same. Mine seem consistent with what I have read about the latest run. Just a cardboard box and inside a lunch bag within to hold the heasphones. Just shocking.
I am sure you have the one that got all the great reviews.
Frankly, it should be illegal. They should need to change the product number when they do this.
Having worked in wholesale I have seen this many many times.
Someone hits a product homerun then the next production run it is cheapened to increase margins.

I have the Focal Elears (bought before the Clears were released) and Oppo PM-2s, and I agree - a different concert experience. I generally prefer the Oppos for orchestral music and the Elears for chamber and piano.

I also have HD-650s purchased about a decade ago. And the Sony WH1000 XM3s.

Why do you say that? I tried that before, and felt like outside sounded better, but I'm always willing to reassess.

Ah, I had a look and saw that they seem to have updated them. Are yours matte-gray?

Looks like a cosmetic update only though, and to be honest the old ones don't look or feel particularly expensive. But they sound great and are very comfortable, and it doesn't look like the updated ones should be any different in that regard.

i don't care if they sound the same as previous runs, the packaging is deplorable

but i doubt the sound is the same

Have you considered the Massdrop Sennheiser HD6XX mentioned in the video? It's received a lot of praise, but I don't own a pair.

Like the two of you, I also have two pairs of cans. And like both of you, one is planar magnetic and the other dynamic. I've got a pair of Oppo PM-2's and Beyerdynamic T1 gen2's.
To be honest, I prefer the Beyerdynamic headphones, regardless of the type of music I'm listening to. The Oppo's are not flawed. They reproduce music wonderfully. But doing A/B comparisons, there really isn't any. The T1's have more weight in their presentation, and most of it is in the lower end of the audio spectrum.
I have had decent book shelf speakers on stands integrated with a subwoofer and I have had tower speakers integrated with a subwoofer. I prefer the later. There is more weight from the low mid's down, which has an effect of the perception of the sound stage as well. For me, it is a better presentation.

I recently sold my Magnepan MG-IIIs, and replaced them with a set of audiophile quality DIY speakers.

They are a slightly modified version of Jeff Bagby's "Kairos" and his woofer modules.

    https://meniscusaudio.com/product/ka...full-kit-pair/

I don't have mine veneered yet (they are just bare wood), but they will look a lot like these:

    kairos.jpg

I spent about $1500.00 total, plus my labor (more simple than many would believe), and ended up with the equivalent sound quality of high end, commercially available, speakers that would cost about $8000.00, and possibley more. A 5-10 times multiplier is not unusual for DIY speakers.

They are comprised of SB Acoustics drivers, a company started by one of Scan Speak's lead engineers, 'flat lay' copper coils, polypropylene caps (mostly Clarity Cap), metal oxide resistors in the crossovers. And all the cabinet panels are made of MDF and birch ply in a constrained layer damping configuration (not necessary, but I had the supplies around).

The crossover and cabinet design allowed Jeff to get as close to being phase and transient perfect as possible. The end result is a speaker that has a mid-range and high frequency that are almost spooky in their naturalness. Not to mention their soundstage that extends well beyond the width and depth of the walls of my fairly small listening room, and very precise image within that soundstage.

I can't help but get a huge grin on my face when I hear instruments coming from 15 feet to the left or right of my walls, or percussion coming from 40 feet back, behind the orchestra. And all with extreme detail and clarity.

The only real drawback with DIY speakers, is the resale value is quite a bit lower than commercially available speakers. But that is mitigated, by how much better they sound compared to the $$ spent. Seriously, how often would one feel they need to sell their speakers to upgrade, when they sound as good as speakers costing several times more than they spent?
