Default Discussion: Bavarian Radio SO Succession

It's been long since Mariss Jansons' passing away. Covid may have stopped things from January to September. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is one of my favourites today. I have found a fine Q&A from the BR site about the succession process but I want to know who do you think would be the "ideal conductor" for the orchestra, according to the memo.

I can only think of Vasily Petrenko, bringing together their mastership in Shostakovich (sorry for the Liverpool musicians, but I don't think they stand a chance against the current BR). He apparently will be contract-free from the 2021-2022 season. I think YNS is still too young and perfectly busy in New York to take on the heavy Germanic repertoire. Jakub Hrůša also rings my bell but the Hamburg position (and venue) seem more tempting...

Default Sir Simon Rattle ready to quit London Symphony Orchestra for job in Germany

From the Times (11 january 2021): >>Sir Simon Rattle ready to quit London Symphony Orchestra for job in Germany

Britain’s most famous conductor, Sir Simon Rattle, is expected to quit his London job and take up a new post in Germany, The Times has learnt.

Rattle, who turns 66 next week, has been music director of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) since 2017, initially on a five-year contract that was expected to be extended.

However, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich, one of Germany’s best, will reveal this week that he will be its next music director. It is believed that he will announce his departure from the London orchestra at the same time, because the two compete on international markets.

The news will be a shock to the British orchestral world, which has already been demoralised by the collapse of musical activity during the pandemic.

Rattle, who was chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 16 years, has kept his German links. He still lives in Berlin with his third wife, the Czech-born singer Magdalena Kozena, and their three children. He has made no secret of his dismay about Brexit, and has formed closer ties with the Bavarian orchestra since the death in 2019 of Mariss Jansons, its previous music director.

However, the main reason for him quitting London is believed to be the receding prospects of building a new concert hall in the capital. Rattle regards the Barbican Hall, the home of the LSO, as inadequate for world-class music making. It was widely reported when he joined the London orchestra that the City of London Corporation’s offer to build a new Centre for Music was a deciding factor.

After a promising start the scheme has become mired in complexities. The centre is scheduled to be built on the site of the present Museum of London, but that cannot happen until the museum is moved to the nearby Smithfield Market.

Work on that will not begin until Smithfield’s meat traders move to a new market that has not yet been constructed at Dagenham Dock, but it was revealed last summer that the traders have leases at Smithfield extending to 2028. The chances of a new London concert hall opening in the next decade are now regarded as minimal.

The move is a blow for British music. Even in the few seasons he has conducted the London orchestra, Rattle’s concerts have garnered rave reviews and, until the lockdown, capacity crowds. The irony for him is that he is swapping London for a city, Munich, that also has no world-class concert hall, but it may have tempted him with a more convincing offer to build one.

^^^ Now being reported as done and dusted by the BBC. Big blow to the LSO, as Simon Rattle had big concert hall ideas on his to do list.

Sign of things to come, as we become an insignificant backwater, not just economically, but also culturally, it seems.

Respectfully beg to differ. Rattle arrived in London after the vote to leave, and the above article itself points to the projected new concert hall (or more precisely to the lack of it) as the main driver for Rattle's choice now.

Appointed in March 2015, well before the vote.

    Nothing to do with Brexit.

On his third wife, dumped his African American second wife and eloped with a Central European Opera singer - his notion of loyalty is rather sketchy.

Makes room for younger up and coming talent.

Glad to see the back of him (even though I rate him as a musician).

My new year's resolution is to buy less new music and listen more to the absolutely STUPID amount of music I already have.

So Rattle chooses to abandon the LSO, signalling his intention at a time when they need his support most. When he took the position in London he knew of the difficulty caused by his family remaining in Berlin. To now state he's going to the BRSO to be nearer to them rather begs the question as to why he left the Berlin Phil in the first place?

Perhaps the LSO made him an offer that was too good to resist? I do fear, like CnC, that it may be a sign of things to come. He's not the only one jumping ship to get away from this declining Isle. Even Boris' dad wants out. Says it all really. Although no Rattleite, it's a blow to lose such a high profile conductor regardless of what I think of his abilities. He says it's for personal reasons and so I can't blame him, really, but it couldnt come at worse time
I think they'll offer the job to either Stormzy or Ant and Dec.

Johnson Snr.has said his application is "symbolic" and aimed mainly at easing the path for his grandchildren should they wish to work in the EU. He did vote Remain but I don't know of any indication that he "wants out".

Sorry, but this is Brexit 100%.

    And Reuters say this:

BERLIN (Reuters) - Star conductor Simon Rattle, who this week announced he was cutting short his tenure at Britain’s leading orchestra to return to Germany, said on Friday he had applied for German citizenship after Brexit.

The Liverpool-born musician, 65, lamented the barriers thrown up by Britain’s departure from the European Union to the careers of young musicians who had grown used to performing freely to the continent’s music-hungry public.

“My passport is on the way,” Rattle told a news conference when asked if he had followed many EU-based Britons in applying for the citizenship that will let them continue to work freely around the bloc. “Like for many, this was an absolute necessity.”

Britain’s music scene was taken by surprise when Rattle announced he would end his tenure at the London Symphony Orchestra in 2023 to become music director of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich.

Rattle said his decision to return to Germany, where for 16 years he conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, was taken so that he could be close to his family in the German capital, but he made his frustration with Britain’s political direction clear.

“The fact that musicians and artists in general suddenly have to get visas for Europe is absolutely not the Brexit bonus we were talking about,” he said, in apparent reference to promises made by Brexit campaigners during the 2016 EU membership referendum. “We will have to fight it.”

    Or is this "fake news"???

You don't honestly take Mr Lebrecht's word for it, do you? Rattle would have gone to Germany anyway. Why on earth should he stay in UK when he has a family in Germany? His frustration is that the country would not spend millions on an unwanted concert hall he demanded.

We need to stop viewing everything through a Brexit prism.
