    That is very true, sadly enough. I've been reading Leonard Slatkin's latest book and he mentions that sad fact: Americans not welcome on the podium. Although that will change soon as orchestras become more woke, promoting women and POC to the top, qualified or not. Of course I've played under a number of American conductors trained in America and let me tell you, they have egos - all of them - but they don't have ears, they can't do solfeggio, and some have really crappy ideas.

    Big Egos, lack of ears, crappy ideas seem to be characteristics of many conductors!! not just Americans....

    But I see your point...I'm not sure that present day conductor training really measures up to that of the past...many present day conductors just don't have a concept of how an orchestra should, or could sound, or how to provide signals to the orchestra that will produce the desired sound....how to fix things, to understand the qualities and difficulties of the different instruments.

    There are certainly some fine conductors working today....but there are also some real hackers whose most positive attributes are the ability to BS Boards of Directors, and promote themselves as something special.
