I've heard some very good things from him...some Wagner, Shostakovich, and one of the best Mahler 9s I've ever heard with Chicago...i wish one of the US major orchestras would appoint him as music director....see what he can do over a few years at the helm..
He often gets good press but I haven't heard many recordings of his apart from a performance of the New World back on the Erato label which I recall was fairly good (but it's been a long time since I heard it).
The symphonies are solid but too Brahmsian to reveal any real individuality. Thankfully he got them out the way so the real goodies could emerge later.
I've been to the LA Opera several times when Conlon is in the pit - extremely fine Zemlinsky "The Drawf" and fantastic Rosenkavalier. Excellent musician and conductor who for some reason hasn't risen to the top. Maybe he doesn't want to. He reminds me of Erich Leinsdorf in a way: fine opera conductor, but maybe not so much on the concert stage. And more concerned about playing what the composer wrote that inserting himself into the music. Excellent Liszt Faust Symphony on Erato, btw.
