Default Applying equalization to an audio file

I have some recordings which I think could benefit from EQ. I listen by streaming FLAC files from my computer and the playback software I use has an EQ feature, but rather than fiddle each time I listen, I think it might be more convenient to apply the EQ to the file and save the result to FLAC, to be available next time. It strikes me that one pitfall is that the result can have bigger transients and clip, unless I adjust the volume.

Seems like I can use audacity to do this. Can anyone suggest a superior option?

You can add a limiter after the EQ to prevent clipping. With very moderate settings so as to not brickwall, but only prevent peaks from exceeding 0dB.
