Default Headphone Upgrade - Best Decision I've made!

It's been about 3 or 4 months since I've upgraded from a pair of skullcandy headphones to AKG K701s, and I gotta say it was the best musical decision I've ever made! The timbre is so much more natural and lifelike, things like percussion and pizzicato sound spectacular and addicting. I'm here listening to the Fitzwilliams Shosty SQs, and just melting over the sound of the strings being torn into, it's truly spectacular.

I highly recommend classical music fans checking out some of the higher quality equipment, as it does wonders to this type of music. Thanks again for everyone who recommended I go this route .

Do you drive your AKG K701s from a dedicated headphone amp ?

    Definitely.

I went from a Fiio E3, to a Rolls HA43 and ended up at Fiio E5. I can budget about $100usd towards a headphone amp right now, and the Fiio E5 is the most clear sounding I've tried. I'm hearing tremendous amounts of detail as it is, I can't really imagine it sounding better without having to spend significantly more than I want to.

Once I finish school I'll probably check out some other amp options, but I'm more than satisfied with the Fiio.

Please do that, because your headphones definitely need a better amp to sound right.

Actually, the Fiio is an amazing little amp that does "sounds right" with the K701. As I said before, I'm sure it can get better, but it certainly doesn't take a $300 headphone amp in order for these headphones to "sound right." I have tried the other amp, and there was a "veilness" to it, the detail I was hearing with the Fiio vs it (the rolls) was very different...I'm wondering if that's to do with the signal to noise ratio, as the Fiio has a much higher number than the Rolls, or many other amps within the price range (or more accurately, 3-4 times the price of the Fiio).

But I don't mean for this to turn into a headphone amp discussion, I've done enough of those on head-fi.org.
