Thread: Greetings, From Hawaii!!!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Zach and I just recently joined this site! I look forward to meeting you all.....the rest of the kids my age mostly listen to rock and "loud" music(Im 14 1/2 yrs old)....I've been listening to classical music for about a year...I hope to major in music and eventually become a conductor someday...I have 2 years exp in Clarinet, 2 months in violin, and I have to take piano lessons really soon..I hope I didn't say too much to frighten you guys!
Anyway, Thank you again for this oppurtunity, and I look forward to meeting you all, fellow classical music lovers!

Wow, 14 and a half. Best to start young.

We have a professional conductor here: Kurkikohtaus. I'm sure he will be able to give you some useful tips, if you can catch him as he is very busy.

And oh yes I like Lenny too (I saw your other post). Probably my top favourite is Otto Klemperer.

What clarinet pieces are your favourites, not necessarily ones you can play? Do you know any of the Brahms clarinet works? Mozart's clarinet concerto is probably my overall favourite. There is some very nice von Weber too.

Ditto for violin, and piano. Do you have any composers you particularly like?

How do you find the time for all the practice? I imagine there must be many distractions in Hawaii.

This is 4/4player. I wanted to reply to you about your questions you had in my thread. So here they are:
Favorite Composers: Dvorak,Mozart, Vivaldi,Beetoven,korsakov, and my most favorite composer of all is....Tchaikovsky!
Favorite clarinet pieces:I've only listen to the mozart concerto pieces....so I guess they are my favorites. Though Im willing to listen to other pieces if I find them.Any suggestions?
How I find the time to practice?: Hmm....thats a good question....I always try to find a way to practice somehow

Welcome 4/4player. If Tchaikovsky is your favorite composer shouldn't you be a 3/4player because of all his waltzes?

Care to divulge your favorite Tchaikovsky pieces, though? To me, his "Pathetique" Symphony is the greatest indication of his compositional prowess, his melodic genius, and his bursting passion. The outer movements, in particular, are unlike anything he ever wrote. That finale is the most expressive symphonic movement of turmoil and despair I've ever heard. It's a shame he died from that symphony, just as it's a shame Mozart died from the Requiem.

For clarinet: I second Topaz's remarks and recommend Brahms's Clarinet Trio and Quintet and Weber's Clarinet Concertos.

Tchaikovsky: some of my favourites are Marche Slave, Romeo and Juliet overture, variatons on a rococo theme Op 33, capriccio italien op 45, violin concerto, Syms 4/5/6

Brahms: Agree with Hexameron. You might try the clarinet quintet first (op 115). If you can get it with the piano quintet (op 34), together they would make an excellent introduction to Brahms. These are two first class works (I like especially the piano quintet). They should get you on a path to liking Brahms. There's tons more.

Weber: He used to be (in the 19th C) much more highly regarded than he is these days. His 2 clarinet concertos are very nice, as Hexameron said.

My favorite tchaikovsky pieces are march slave and his symphony No. 4 in F minor(My city's local symphony performed those exact two pieces on their opening season night! I blame them for getting me to like Tchaikovsky,hehe ) I never heard Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique" Symphony...yet. I'll make sure to pick up a CD of that piece the next time I stop at my local bookstore!
Oh, and I just chose the name,"4/4player" because its a standard time meter in music(I may be wrong) But I enjoy the memories of my band teacher and violin teacher yelling at me to play in time and "4/4" when I began to learn music,hehe.

Oh yes, Tchaikovsky's 4th is spectacular; that first movement is so hypnotizing and forceful, isn't it? It's like Tchaikovsky wanted to challenge Beethoven's 5th symphony with his own vision of what "fate" meant to him. I envy your future experience with Tchaikovsky's 6th... hope it blows you away.

Oh, and I just chose the name,"4/4player" because its a standard time meter in music(I may be wrong)

Of course you're right: 4/4 is also known as "common time."
