Yes things are certainly livening up a bit, compared to a few months ago. I have no suggestions for improvement, as all seems to be going well... Actually I think it's excellent that you don't need forum moderators to censor all the profanity and foolishness that often occurs on internet forums... Congratulatory remarks to the admin team!

Ah, I have one idea... Perhaps an introductory guide could be useful for members new to classical music, with a brief outline of the history/theory/practise, or links to sites such as wikipedia instead. Something that could help people learn more about classical music, and come to appreciate it further... Just a thought.

    Hello Fellow Classical Music Lovers!,

I must say, this forum is really wonderful. Finally, a way to converse with classical music beings!
Perhaps you could create monthly contests for members(maybe a music trivia or raffle drawing) with the prize being a CD or a music score....This is only a suggestion...
Anyway, I look forward to more better improvements in the near future!=)

    Best Wishes,

Just another suggestion - perhaps a few active moderators need to be appointed, as some spam/advertising is building up in a few of the forums.

Someone might have already mentioned this, but it would be nice, if this sight becomes more active, to have a poll feature.

    P.S. LOVE THIS SITE!

Sorry to disagree, but I think this place works perfectly well without any active moderators. You only need an "invisible" one to delete porn, bad language etc.

I think we're all generally sufficiently well-behaved not to need any discipline.

    Right,

Actually no moderating function is needed at the moment. As Topaz mentioned in the ugly thread - which I already deleted - : Please send me a Private Message, if you see any unwanted spam or any obscure, unpolite and disgusting posts and so on, so it will be deleted. I keep attention, too, but, since my time is really limited these days, we all have to help each other.

    Thanks!

I think it is great as it is, I am only sorry that I don’t make more posts !
I have just signed off an excellent site where the F word was becoming quite common and the moderators said they would accept it, so keep up the good work and thanks.

Bad language usually comes from troublemakers. If Daniel hasn't spotted it, maybe send him a PM and let him use his judgement as to whether to issue a warning aimed privately to that poster. In my view it should be 3 incidents and you're out for really distasteful stuff. Some sites have zero tolerance, especially when it's directed personally at members.

As for porn, it's easy to spot it. A first clue is a new poster (obviously not always the case). Next, the topic is not music, and these days it's often dressed up (very cheekily) as asking for advice on how to get rid of it. Third, there's usually a hyper-link to something that's obviously not music. If anyone inadvertently clicks on any such rubbish, you risk getting a "trojan" immediately, and without something like Norton it's almost imposible to get rid of. This is common knowledge, but some people seem a bit naive given their responses.

I suppose we might be able to discuss musical instruments. Good ones are SO vital for performances. I studied Clarinet and Oboe. For years I had a really good clarinet. Or so I thought. But one day a colleague offered me a clarinet for sale I'd never seen before. It was beautifully made. It was French. By a maker called Buffet-Crampon. And it was very expensive.

Well, to cut a long story short, I bought it from him. It cost a lot. But it virtually played itself. It was a revelation. And my sheer love of it made music far, far more enjoyable. I hardly realised before then how invisible an instrument must be if we are to play well.

Six months later the seller of the clarinet begged me to sell it back. I reluctantly agreed because he pleaded with me. But now I understand why people pay great prices for wonderful instruments. It's a great thing to have one made by the very best instrument makers. Really.

So that's my suggestion for clarinets - Buffet Crampon of Paris. Wonder if other members have suggestions for their own best instrument makers. They make SUCH a difference, yes ?

As an after thought to my earlier post, one thing I think we all have is a system to play our music through at home, how about a section just for this side of our passion ??, eg what system are you running, latest equipment, problem solving, If you think it is warranted I would be honoured to start it off. I really do think it should be kept separate from general music discussion.
PS I have resigned from the other site just cant stand the language

Andante: Good idea. As you say, the sound system is the other side of our passion. Some people may welcome advice, or like to give advice, on problem solving. I know I've had to deal with several problems, as I tend to use my PC as the main sound system. I also download most of my music these days, which is another potential problem area.

I have just alerted you to a new porn thread.

Can you prevent further posts from such places by getting your server to refuse to sign on new accounts with the same IP address as the ones you delete?

Some very nice ideas in this thread. I'll just give my initial thoughts on some of the ones that has been mentioned.

An introductory guide is indeed a nice idea, however, there are some problems involved. It would have to be quite extensive as I'm not sure if it's really possible to make a "brief" outline of history/theory/practice - theory alone really requires a larger article.

However, perhaps it's worth experimenting and make an "Introduction to classical music" sticky thread in the beginners forum. It could be made a a sort of wikipedia project, so that members can perpetually PM suggestions for improvements to the admins, that we could keep it updated. All contributors would of course be credited. If anyone's up to starting it out, please PM me or Daniel with your suggestions.

Monthly contests (and/or other recurring activities) is definately an interesting idea, which we will be discussing further.

There does seem to have been a serious increase of spam lately. So far Daniel and I have been able to handle it, but there is one problem in particular which perhaps makes it a necessity to add one or more moderators. The time zones. The fact that both Daniel and I live in Europe and are most likely at sleep, exactly at the hours when many of the spammers are active. We'll have to consider this further, but I think there will be an opening for moderators soon, but mainly to handle spam etc. as Daniel and I can easily handle whatever problems there may arise between members.

I like the idea about adding a "Hi-FI" section. This will be added soon!

Thanks for the ideas - and keep them coming!

    Regards,
    Frederik Magle
