  1. Charles-Marie Widor (1844 - 1937)

Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent (the forty days of spiritual reflection and atonement that precede Easter). During the lenten season, I have programmed four PTB posts dedicated to the king of instruments, the organ.

The series will be interspersed with la Chronique du disque (next week and on March 27) and a special post for Daylight Saving Time (March 13). I haven't done much in these pages with the organ, so I hope you won't mind this tiny

I don’t think I need to say much as an introduction for this Valentine’s Day playlist – the theme of love is everywhere in Classical Music, in all eras, in all genres… The problem I had wasn’t finding stuff to put here, as much as what I had to keep out!

To begin, from this week's SNL - the bit I want to share starts at the 1:00 mark:

  3. This too is Groundhog Day

This is getting ridiculous - now, only ONE video per post

Last Thursday, I put together a montage for Groundhog Day, and the music of shadows.

However, Groundhog Day has come to mean something entirely different in recent years. No, it has nothing to do with groundhogs predicting a shorter or longer winter, but rather has to do with, well... why explain when I can show you:

As part of my Friday blog and montage this week, I will be featuring music by Montreal composer and pianist André Mathieu (1929-1968). I thought I would spend some time today discussing Mathieu, and illustrating some of his music through available materials.
