  1. Handel, Mozart, Herbert von Karajan ‎– The Water Music Suite / Eine Kleine Nachtmusik

This week’s Vinyl’s Revenge share is a rare EMI recording of Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic – rare, simply because most of the discography of Karajan and his Berlin orchestra belongs to the Deutsche Grammophon catalogue. We forget, however, that Karajan’s career post-World War II had a somewhat formative period in London of all places. To discuss, let me borrow some excerpts from a five-year old article from an Australian publication.

Karajan was born in 1908, which,

  2. Joseph Haydn, András Schiff ‎– Piano Sonatas

This week's YouTube share, in our Cover 2 Cover series, is kind of a follow-up to two past Friday montages, Haydn at the keyboard from about two years ago and a recent montage featuring Scarlatti and Mozart keyboard sonatas performed by András Schiff. Schiff is again featured, this time in a few Haydn keyboard sonatas.

This week’s Cover 2 Cover post is another album from the Brilliant Classics label, this one dedicated to the music of Tchaikovsky.

As is often the case with these Brilliant Classics releases, this CD is a re-issue (or re-distribution). The recording has been in the catalog of Saison Russe, Le Chant du Monde and Harmonia Mundi since 1994 and features Russian cellist Alexander Rudin and the Moscow-based Musica Viva Chamber Orchestra.

    Elektra and Carrie

In April 1988 the musical version of Stephen King’s Carrie began a chaotic series of previews at Broadway’s Virginia Theatre; it never opened officially and for years was best remembered from author Ken Mendelbaum’s descriptions of it in his funny, insightful study of failed Broadway musicals, Not Since Carrie (1991). According to Mendelbaum, Carrie
