  1. Practice Problems

    Many people have commented on how hard it is to learn new things when you're older, and they're not kidding. In the first few days of this week, I did my violin practice first, and then in the evening, after tea, I did about 20 minutes piano practice with the basic melody only five-finger notes, and Taggart overseeing me! I found I was very tired and couldn't wait to get it over with.

  2. The Aeolian String Quartet Plays Haydn (Part 1)

    Vinyl's Revenge starts a two-part look (or should I say, listen) at the string quartets of Joseph Haydn.

    Haydn was Kapellmeister to the Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, a great lover of music.   3. My first piano lesson

    My teacher - we'll call her Rho - is a young married woman with children and as they'd got back from a holiday trip at midnight the previous night, the family were still at the breakfast table when I got there.

    Rho has a grand piano in her room, and the first thing was to check my position. I was sitting too near, so she made me put my seat back and have my right leg stretched forward a little, and my left leg tucked in. This meant that later my right hand was too near the back of

  4. Late Learner

    Thursday, 30th October 2014:


    Today I had my first piano lesson. I am sixty-three years old. I learned the violin when I was young, and came back to it when I was sixty. I am a retired teacher, who has taught every age and stage from eight-year-olds to university students.
