I was thinking about the musicological canon today (as always!) and considering the ratio of radical to non-radical composers in it.

Brahms is the only conservative who is taken really seriously by academics (as seriously as, say, Haydn). I think there are a number of reasons for this.

1 - His music is of a consistently high standard. (He destroyed works he deemed sub-par.)

2 - He completes the "3 Bs". (Plus he is a white German male which helps!)

  2. Disappeared: Chapters 2, 3

It was June, and I knew something was definitely wrong with Elena. She would never spend evenings with me ever. In fact, she hardly wanted to be with me at all! What had I done to her? It hurt me very much. All she wanted to do was practice and be alone all the time. This may have been symptoms of depression, so I thought. I completed the string parts of my Berio transcription. I just need to fill out the wind parts and then that's another module finished. The piece, 'Leaf' is made almost entirely from close staccato chords. The interest comes from the elusive third pedal which allows selected pitches to sustain.

Neeme Jarvi's rendition of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suites 1, 2 & 3 came through the post from ebay today. Right off the bat,

  5. Music and Literature

    Hello y'all!

As some of you will already know, I study literature at university. Owing to my love of language and poetry, this is what informs my passion for the tone poem above all other types of music.

Unfortunately, though I think it's imperative to understand the literature behind a literary-inspired piece of music - even if you listen to the music first before searching out the relevant texts - it's too often the case that people simply aren't interested,
