Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650): Requiem & Motets (~1605-1609), as recorded in 2018 by Cupertinos, conducted by Luís Toscano. With Gabriela Braga Simões (alto), Eva Braga Simões (soprano), Brígida Silva (alto), Almeno Gonçalves (tenor).

To those who are enamored of Victoria I can heartily recommend Manuel Cardoso. Same era, same area, and the same kind of chromatic inventiveness, inspiration and lengthy phrasing. This disc introduced me to Cardoso and I still play it from time to time.

Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius & Symphony No. 1

Peter Auty (tenor), Michelle Breedt (mezzo soprano) & John Hancock (baritone)

Royal Flemish Philharmonic, with Collegium Vocale Gent, Edo de Waart
I felt like listening to this work and found the subject recording on my streaming service. Just finished listening. I loved it! I find this recording to be excellent, better than Handley's which is the only one I have in my collection. If you like The Dream of Gerontius, I think you will want to give this one a listen.

Now it's time for another cello concerto from the abyss...

Penderecki
Cello Concerto No. 2
Arto Noras, cello
Sinfonia Varsovia
Penderecki

This recording originally appeared on the Finlandia label, but it was later reissued by Elatus (Warner), but both of these iterations of this recording are difficult to find nowadays. It was quite an expensive recording when I bought it several years ago. Fabulous performances, though!

I couldn't be without this CD!

And I was lucky enough to catch a performance of Three Mantras in London a few years ago - a Prom concert.

We are so lucky to have that incredible annual music festival on our doorstep in London!

Bartók
Bluebeard's Castle
Júlia Várady, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
Bayerisches Staatsorchester
Sawallisch

This isn't the most Expressionistic Bluebeard in the catalog, but Sawallisch's attention to detail and nuance makes everything incredibly beautiful. Sung in Hungarian, which is what I personally prefer. I never have been a fan of an opera that is sung in the language that wasn't intended by the composer. The Hungarian language gives this work a certain bite that I love. The vocalists in this performance are superb: Júlia Várady is a bit restrained, but she paints a lovely picture and Fischer-Dieskau really doesn't need any commentary. This recording is one of my top choices in Bluebeard's Castle.
