Hi Everyone,

I am a retired professor of psychology (with a **** from Juilliard, in
composition). I give occasional talks (with some piano illustrations)
to senior groups.
I will be giving such a talk in April on the topic of the celebration
worldwide of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Robert Schumann.
I am interested in learning if there are descendants of Robert and
Clara Schumann , perhaps some still living. What became of the
seven out of the eight children they had who survived until adulthood?
Any information about this will be helpful to me, as senior groups
usually ask if there are children who survived these parents, and
what happened to them.

Best wishes to all,
Robert H. Roth

Yes, there are living descendants

Hi Robert, I am trying to find the connection between Robert Schumann and Hildegard Marie Luise Schumann,
According to my mother her lineage is through the male descendants of Robert Schumann, she was the only child of her father, thus the name line was ended with her, she married a Johann Georg Reinhold Hauf in Prenden, Germany, and moved with him to Berlin, Germany where they had a child called Hans Hauf who in turn had me. So according to this I would indeed be the as direct as possible descendant of Robert Schumann, given that the direct lineage in Germany is passed through the male descendants... Any more information on this would be welcome. Thank you and greetings!

I'm afraid I can't help you at all Mr Roth. What I can say that may be of interest to your seniors groups is that both Robert and Clara are jointly buried in Bonn's Alter Friedhof (Old Cemetery) in a rather beautiful white marble plot. This grave is only a few metres away from where Beethoven's mother is buried.

Hey there! Not sure if anyone will see this post as this thread is kind of old but I was looking to maybe help you out if I can.

I'm fairly certain that I am a direct descendant from Robert and Clara, my grandfather and his 3 brother's whom all have strong musical backgrounds have long maintained the relation, he once even presented me with a family tree of sorts containing the names in order showing the direct link from Schumann to myself. I will do my best to dig it up and I cannot find it, I will contact him!

I spoke with my grandfather and he explained the lineage to me and also provided me with a copy of the birth certificate of Schumann's first granddaughter (who would be my great great great grandma). Her name was Anna Marie Ottilie, but she was born out of wedlock when Marie Schumann (Clara and Robert's first child) was 20. The father by adoption ended up being a man named Augustus Budow and Anna Marie eventually took that name in place of Schumann.

Very interesting account. I know it is an old thread but wanted to know if any of the Schumanns descendants are alive today. I know they had eight children.

The Schumann-Haus Leipzig suggests that there are.

Julie Schumann married count Vittorio Amadeo Radicati di Marmorito and there appear to have been descendants through Roberto Radicati di Marmorito although difficult to track down.

Elise Schumann married Louis Sommerhoff and there were certainly descendants until quite recently. They included Gerd Sommerhoff whose wiki article gives details of other Sommerhoffs.
