(Cold Meat Industry)

Here's a shockingly delicate band by CMI standards, an Italian gothic act full of romanticism and airy fantasies... We'll be focusing on their CMI debut from 2005, a masterpiece of rainy moods and silken melancholy, carried gracefully by their singer Viola's fragile voice, an aching dream of desire and loss...

Let's meet our next act, shall we... Danish musician Kim Larsen's :Of the Wand and the Moon: plays a highly original strain of melancholic darkfolk, cultivating a somber, pessimistic, benighted poetry that I find most entrancing and addictive. He has gained quite a bit of fame in both metal and post-industrial circles over the years, becoming something of a household name nowadays. We will intoxicate ourselves with a number of his releases, starting in the late '90s...

I greatly enjoy promoting this Norwegian artist's work, given how excellent and how utterly obscure it is... We'll consider Erik Evju's first two LPs on Soulseller Records, from 2012 and 2013 respectively, masterful darkfolk for the crestfallen...

Since it just got released, let's meet our first Cryo Chamber artist - Sweden's Dahlia's Tear. He's been releasing dark ambient since 2005 on various labels, including an album on Cold Meat Industry in 2012 just before the label's shutdown. Since then he's been on Cryo Chamber. This is what the label has to say...

Dahlia's Tear presents us his new album Tales from a Feeble Dream. A masterfully crafted album with rich ethereal textures and droning detailed compositions.

"As I slowly approached the ghost town covered in thick fog, all I could see were countless derelict kites hanging from iron bars stuck in the ground. Every faint object that I could see in a blurry way was as if it hadn't been touched for centuries. The melody I heard from a distant place was familiar. I was somewhere between dream and reality. Time was moving slower than usual. In the dark silver-painted sky, the moon and the night were embracing each other. Pushing the heavy gates open the touch of the iron bars, as cold as ice, seized up my hand completely. Even though I could feel the unevenness of the old cobbled path beneath me, they were smooth in contrast to the crunching of the odd dead leaf that I stepped on. This gate was the one that would carry my consciousness into infinite dreams..."

Recommended for fans of melancholic powerful atmospheres.

Another neofolk act that I endlessly enjoy promoting due to its brilliance and extreme obscurity, the Dutch Strydwolf, seen as something of a giant among experts. He achieved some of the purest expressions of the World Wars of any genre. We will illustrate with two LPs, one early and the other one recent...

Dresden is home to the legendary Darkwood, one of the stars of the German neofolk scene. Like Strydwolf, he produced some of the best expressions of the World Wars and serves as a prime example of neofolk martial purity. Let's consider his compilation from 2015, Flammenlieder, going through some of his best material...

Hungarian neofolk-industrial project of Sörös Gergö (former member, now contributor of Cawatana) on vocals, percussions, acoustic guitar, and keyboards, with various guest musicians on stage and in the studio. This is the project's third LP released by Rage in Eden in Poland.

Leger Des Heils is a German electronic act founded in 1999. They create a hybrid synth-folk-martial sound, usually melancholic and minimal with German vocals.

"Anthem-like Neo-Folksongs contrast with martial-flavored Hymns and Military-Pop. By listening, one can experience a strong emotional kinship, a sense of belonging to origin, tradition and the all-surrounding nature – but also the pain, the suffering and the fragility that human beings feel in their struggle with society and their own lives. Amazing compositions with gorgeous melodies (instrumentally elaborated through the addition of trumpet, accordion, cello, and others) will accompany the listener on their journey to the LICHT! (light)."

H.E.R.R. (Heiliges Europa Römisches Reich) is a Dutch / English band that was founded in 2002 by Michiel Spapé (composer). Other core members are Miklos Hoffer (vocals/live percussion) and, from the second album onwards, Troy Southgate (vocals/live percussion/guitar). Musically, they have been described as neofolk, minimalist, Neoclassical and martial. They have achieved some distinction within those genres, particularly following the success of their second and third albums, 'The Winter of Constantinople' (2005) and 'Vondel's Lucifer: First Movement' (2006).

"Lucifer" (1654) is the major masterpiece of Netherlands' national writer Joost van den Vondel (1587 – 1679). The play may have had an impact on John Milton's later work "Paradise Lost" (1667).

Alright time for one of the major classics of the neofolk/apocalyptic folk movement...

Sol Invictus are an English neofolk band fronted by Tony Wakeford. Wakeford has been the sole constant member of the group since its inception, although numerous musicians have contributed and collaborated with Wakeford under the Sol Invictus name over the years.

After disbanding his controversial project Above the Ruins, Wakeford returned to the music scene with Sol Invictus in 1987. Since then Sol Invictus has had many musician contributions, including Sarah Bradshaw, Nick Hall, Céline Marleix-Bardeau, Nathalie Van Keymeulen, Ian Read and Karl Blake.

Wakeford repeatedly referred to his work as folk noir. Beginning with a mixture of a rough, bleak, primitive post punk sound and acoustic/folk elements, the band's music gradually evolved toward a lush, refined style, picking up classically trained players such as Eric Roger, Matt Howden, and Sally Doherty. In the mid-1990s, Sol Invictus spun off a side project called L'Orchestre Noir (later changed to Orchestra Noir) to explore an even more classically influenced direction. 2005 saw the departure of longtime contributors Roger and Blake, leading to a new line-up including Caroline Jago, Lesley Malone and Andrew King.

In 1990, Wakeford formed his own label, Tursa, to release his material and the music of other artists. The World Serpent Distribution Company previously distributed this material worldwide, followed then by Cold Spring Records. In July 2007, the label was re-launched as a partnership with Israeli producer and musician Reeve "M" Malka. In 2009, Sol Invictus signed to Prophecy Records. In June 2011, Sol Invictus announced the end of their partnership both with Cold Spring Records and musician Andrew King.

This one's a real delight...

Camerata Mediolanense is an ensemble of musicians established in Milan, Italy in 1994. Their music can be classified as darkwave/neoclassical, with folk elements.

Head of the project is diplomated classical composer Elena Previdi, other members come from different trainings and musical experiences: percussionist and singer Trevor and percussionist Manuel Aroldi come from the post-punk scene, while former lead singer Daniela Bedeski has a past in folk music.

Camerata Mediolanense literally means "group of chamber musicians from Milan" ("Mediolanense" means "from Mediolanum", the Ancient Roman name for Milan). Their music is composed according to the traditions and history of Italy and Europe's classical and folk music, using martial percussions, sublime voices, keyboards and electronic devices.

Here is their latest LP from 2017, released through Prophecy Productions in Germany...

In a time when American folk music has lost touch with its bloody roots, King Dude seeks to illuminate the darkness with sex, death, love, insanity, and Lucifer’s light. Since 2006, his devotional rock ‘n’ roll has been both the medium and the message; his throaty baritone and devilishly visceral songwriting the tools he wields to ignite the fiery spirit of revelation in all who encounter him.

Thanks to past releases on Dais, Avant!, Bathetic, Clan Destine, and Ván records, a number of high-profile festival appearances, and a relentless tour schedule—often alongside the likes of Ghost and Earth—the silver-tongued singer/songwriter has found an ever-expanding global audience with whom to share his prophetic vision of hope and salvation: a willing congregation whose raised voices and stomping feet reliably turn his shows into Luciferian tent revivals.

King Dude is a blue-eyed Mephistopheles with an acoustic guitar; he dresses like Johnny Cash and sings like he cut in line in front of Robert Johnson at the crossroads. His voice can shift from haunting and vulnerable to thunderous near-Biblical fury in the space of a breath, marrying the sacred to the profane with pomp, circumstance, and a curled lip. He sings about death the way he sings about *******. With inspiration torn from country, blues, Americana, and British folk (and a background in heavy metal), King Dude’s raw, hypnotic hymns channel the past while staring straight ahead into a revelatory future.

Some rather mysterious German neofolk, but deeply lovely. They've been active since 2010, but we'll get acquainted with their third LP from 2014, the first to be released through their own tiny label STEINton...

Harvest from dead soil put to music – Fields of Mildew is a German minimalist dark folk project channelling both the cruel hardship and austere beauty of human dwelling in unforgiving surroundings. Like its thematic content, this is a musical journey traversing both hope and despair. Immersive melodies and catchy vocal lines are shrouded in discordant harmonies to produce an atmosphere fit to mirror the human spirit pushed to the limits of despair. The result is something akin to a fusion of a stripped-down Prag 83, Katatonia, Tenhi, and Western Skies Motel.
