I really just enjoy folks who dress to express. But, it's not that important, but it is a nice thing when done well. It's what the pop music industry attempts to compensate talent with, by selling a package. That idea isn't bad, it's just that most pop stars aren't expressing their inner-voice.

I don´t really read them but it seems there are quite a few threads concentrating on the looks, physical appearance and sexual attraction of CM artists. Many of them created by @Captainnumber36 . I find it a bit peculiar. Maybe I shouldn´t because it reflects the over-visual (or excessively visual, what is a good English expression here?) world we live in. The field of CM is part of that world, although I personally do not pay much attention to the outer appearance of the artists, and if I do pay attention for some reason, I separate the thoughts from the musical and artistic experience.

I do that type of separation too.

Yuja Wang made her mark as a performer before she had her late teen rebellion and started showing flesh to the world. There is of course nothing wrong with the woman being attractive who happens to be a fine pianist but it is when that is the chief attraction that the problem comes. When I am listening to my record player there is absolutely nothing to look at so I judge on performance

If you think about it letting a man's playing or singing enter your ears and dazzle you with his brilliance is— let's face it— a little fruity— not that there's anything wrong with that of course— but as a raging heterosexual I can only bear listening to women— attractive women with perky bosom— not big ol' homely heifers like Birgit Nilsson— or dear God, Eileen Farrell— ew... no thanks!

Given the historically minimal role played by women in classical music, that suggests that if sexual attraction was always important, it was of the homosexual kind. Is that what the OP has in mind?

I am aware of the attractive physical qualities of some classical artists as much as anyone else but with regards to listening it matters not a jot to me - even if an absolute stunner like Lisa Batiashvili was playing on my sound system I like to think that my ears would remain asexual.

It certainly doesn't matter when it comes to audio; but when it comes to, say, opera or ballet on video it's certainly a plus if the performers are pleasant to look at, but I don't think it affects my appreciation of the actual music/performance much.

The music and entertainment industry as a whole plays up the whole physical/sexual attraction angle to a degree. There is always a push to present the next new young and "attractive" artist, skill and ability not withstanding. As a general rule, over age and overweight, "unattractive" kids need not apply.

If i go to a concert its to hear the Composers creation. I would rather not be distracted by a Yuja Wang who is extremely good looking and will distract me from the music. I also dont like record labels (especially DG) that try to sell the attractiveness of their performers rather than the music. Much prefer labels like Hyperion

I've often wondered if the "problem" is the high state of performance education. I was just talking in a chatroom/discord with some college students in music school who were quite frankly taking about playing pieces I've always heard to be professional-level stuff- it seems like kids these days who get quality education can play the Hammerklavier fugue movement standing on their head by sophomore year. If you have that many quality musicians, and you're a record label, you can pick and choose, and those who get the big bucks have a special factor about them, like personality, a marketable personal story, or yes, their look.

You know, there are several members here on TC that are women. Your post comes across as rather uncouth.
