Maybe one by Ferneyhough, but they should transpose freely and of course tune a few cents off and throw in some canon techniques when you least expect it. I would probably love it

I also admit to loving the idea of hearing for example some late Beethoven modified this way! The Quartet no. 16 F major Op. 135 would be my first choice!

String Quartet + Viola = Perfection

Why is it that when a string quartet is on stage, three equations come to my mind.

String Quartet - 2nd Violin + Piano = Perfection
String Quartet + Viola = Perfection
String Quartet + Beethoven = Perfection

String Quartet - 2nd Violin + Piano = Piano sextet

String Quartet + Viola = String Quintet

Funny thing about the Quintet though, it does mean that there's an extra string instrument, but it could be either a viola or a cello.

The last line is obviously equivalent to

Piano + 1st Violin + Violoncello + Beethoven = Perfection, q. e. d.

I should look for Beethoven's piano trios ...
