Okay this is what Liszt is often accused of (maybe not in those exact words but you get the point). So is it?

It's got a lot of citric acid in it, that's what I can't stand about it. Liszt's music, that is.
I'm firmly in the Incomparable World-staggering Genius camp. He was also a beacon of morality, a very learned man, and the best looking composer of all time.

I still agree with this.The problem I have is that his music does not rule nor does it suck. It is stuck somewhere in between.
Red Bull is vastly superior.
Liszt wasn't just about piano virtuosity. He was also one of the big innovators of chromatic harmony and expanded tonality. There's a lot of subtlety and lyricism to his music. Jorge Bolet and Khatia Buniatishvili are two great performers of his piano music. Favorite pieces: Après une lecture de Dante, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 and Piano Concerto No. 2.
About half of it is, which leaves us with a vast amount of music that isn't, as Liszt was a prolific composer.
And incredibly interesting composer. Certainly not always a great composer. But his audacity and sheer modernity! I find him fascinating. And of course, he is extremely important historically. No Liszt and lot of things would probably never have happened. Or at least they wouldn’t have happened when they did. Like, for instance, Debussy, Ravel and Bartók. His son-in-law’s music wouldn’t have sounded the same either, for that matter.
