My ultimate guide to the great pianists

I just find it sad that there are so many incredibly talented musicians who record a huge amount of music, only to be listened to by music critics and the most hardcore fans. So I compiled a list of notable pianists so some of the lesser-known names can get out there.
Notable pianists in alphabetical order

This is kind of a vast list, so it's probably better to consult the list below in order to get a better idea of what the most notable pianists are in the major categories of classical music.

Thanks for doing this. You've made me aware of two things already. One was Tureck as a historically informed performer, I enjoyed reading this

And the other is Johannesen's Faure. I have transfers of the LPs in fact, whether they're more interesting than a historical curiosity I can't say yet.

Good, if exhaustive list. Very nice to see a lot of the earlier, recordings and artists so well represented.

I checked the list for some of the rarely mentioned pianists in my collection, and many were there, but apparently not Anton Batagov, Daniel Ericourt, Frantisek Maxian and George Copeland.
The list reminded me of Josef Hoffmann. I don't see how his playing is anything special, in spite of him ranked in some lists as one of the greatest pianists of all time.
Fun to sift through, and I'll continue to do so. Some folks you might consider adding:
  • Jean-Efflam Bavouzet - major Chandos artist;
  • Paul Crossley - French music specialist;
  • Jean-François Heisser - Spanish music specialist;
  • Ana-Marija Markovina - recorded complete CPE Bach keyboard music on Hänssler;
  • Jorge Luis Prats - not so well known, but a personal favorite of mine;
  • Matti Raekallio - recorded perhaps the best Prokofiev sonata cycle, taught Igor Levit;
  • Einar Steen-Nøkleberg - recorded complete Grieg piano music on Naxos;
  • Alexandre Tharaud - many recordings on Naxos, Harmonia Mundi, and Erato;
  • Lars Vogt - many recordings on Warner, Avi, and Ondine.
My guess is that general consensus would give "generational great" nods to Bavouzet, Tharaud, and Vogt. Not sure though.

Crossley is a rather big name ... also, Nøkleberg is a very fine pianist, though known just for his Grieg interpretations ...
Perhaps we could put in brackets what repertoire the generalists are more famous for

Something like
Martha Argerich (Prokofiev, Schumann, Ravel, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Liszt)
Sviatoslav Richter (Schubert, Scriabin, Bach, Brahms, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy)

But then it would be kinda subjective and a matter of taste and arguments

It’s hard to say because the record repertoire is limited and the sound is so poor. The Casimir Hall concerts - Waldstein and Kreisleriana - show a real musician IMO. There’s also his constant probing into Beethoven PC 4 to think about.

I find his playing draws a lot of attention to itself. He definitely plays with gusto, but he changes tempo and dynamics too often, the latter part I don't think it's just the recording. Once in a while it can be mesmerizing, but overall I just find it clunky.

All these names are good additions, and at least deserve the underline. Probably Raekallio as well

Great suggestions, it seems like I missed some very major ones too
I have a suggestion: Kristian Bezuidenhout under HIP. I've recently been enjoying his growing number of recordings of Mozart in particular.

Edited to add (gee this fun, but I'll stop after this): Víkingur Ólafsson. I'm not impressed by DG's marketing hype surrounding him, but I enjoy his interpretations very much. He's one of the only pianists I listen to performing Baroque pieces (Bach, Rameau), as I like harpsichord.

I am surprised that you did not list Maria Joao Pirez in Chopin Category, her performance of Chopin Nocturnes in my opinion is the finest.
