Back to more normal fare. Two gorgeous but very very different performances for you.
Purcell: Dido and Aeneas / Act III - "Thy hand, Belinda... When I am laid in earth" · Patricia Petibon · La Cetra Barockorchester Basel · Andrea Marcon
Kirsten Flagstad sings Dido's Lament - 'When I am laid in earth' Philharmonia Orchestra

A very distinctly different take on this aria. One a lyric soprano the other a dramatic soprano. Petibon is very intimate and feminine with slightly overdone English pronunciation. Flagstad is much more simple and relaxed here, allowing the music itself to shine. I prefer her diction as the more naturalistic. Flagstad has a much easier time with phrasing smoothly, her breath control and sound production steady as a rock. Petibon's is struggling a bit more trying to interject expressive details and embellishments, but it is an admirable interpretation and I hear what she is trying to do. I choose Flagstad because I prefer her perfectly polished phrasing, not simply because I love her monumental sound.

This one produced its own conclusion without any help from me. The goosebumps that I felt from Petibon spoke volumes.

Very clear winner for me was Flagstaff, the reason being that the Petibon recording is "not available" for me.

I am rarely gone for more than a few hours and can always give you a workaround if a video doesn't work.

I knew some people would love Petibon. Someone suggested her and it was a good call. They are very different.

I like Petibon’s voice, but the words are not clear and seem mired in a stream of sound, only becoming clear (to me) in the higher reaches.

Flagstad sings it with more clarity, and richer tone in a silky legato line of majestic proportions.

I was immediately wary at the start of Petibon's recitative, and not only because her English is a little odd (I assume her native language is French). The espressivo effects rob the music of dignity; the little pout on "welcome guest" is entirely out of character and made me chuckle. The aria is similarly overwrought; I can just see her banging her forehead with the back of one hand while slapping her breast with the other. This is not a queen but a hapless ingenou of the silent screen, begging Snidely Whiplash not to tie her to the railroad tracks.

Flagstad, in her last stage role, is royalty, unrolling the grand phrases with tenderness and resignation as well as perfect breath control (Petibon breaks up phrases), achieving through the simplest means a deeper sense of grief than Petibon does with all her antics. I'm reminded of what Bette Davis said about Garbo: paraphrasing slightly, "We have to act our asses off to achieve what she does by raising an eyebrow."

There are a few Flagstad performances of this that we can hear. The present one is from the complete EMI recording. I don't think it's her most powerful, but her interpretation was pretty consistent. The one below, from a live performance, I consider the best.

Flagstaff is a city in Arizona. Flagstad was amused when people (mostly Americans, I assume) called her that. But I suppose it's better than being called Berjit Nillsin.

Yes, that, too, was my personal favorite but I opted for the better sonics and I knew she was still outstanding.
See, what I mean? You are just a tad opinionated :) I am sure this is the first time you have heard that😜.

Ooops. Sorry, major moment of inattention. Never heard of Flagstaff, Arizona, but there are plenty of tall poles around my city - and no doubt yours - with bits of cloth hanging off.

You may find this incredible, but I can't recall ever being called opinionated before. Given that the word does not mean "likely to have and express opinions'' or even "having strongly held opinions" but something more unpleasant, I'm glad of that. However, one of my opinions, which I'm pleased to express, is that we ought to receive others' opinions of us dispassionately. I am cultivating dispassion today as I look forward to undergoing an angiogram at the hospital this afternoon. For those who haven't got here yet, old age is just tons of fun. Just my opinion, of course. ;)

Glad to hear you like Flagstad's live performance best. The sound isn't really bad, certainly no worse than some of the recordings we've had here. In my opinion, that is. (I promise not to say that again soon.)

Bless your heart today, friend. I don't mean it in a negative way but you do have opinions which is WHY your posts are interesting and you do endeavor to see the other side of the picture with me and others. What is great to me is you express your opinions or ( reactions to the music as it were) in such gorgeous prose they are always a joy to read even if I don't always agree with you... which is actually rare. Good luck today.

I feel intensely repelled by everything Petibon sings or does, by her entire persona. Her mannerisms and antics are affected and ridiculous.
The fact that she does have a beautiful voice only enrages me more, because I DETEST the way she performs.

Best of British (if Ican say that to an American) with the angiogram. (If you don't know the expression, it means good luck.)

You're my new hero in finding the operatically bizarre! 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡 That Olympia by Petibon goes right next to Florence Foster Jenkins. Amen.
