"The Great Conductors - All-Star Extravaganza Edition" - Quarter-Finals - Game 1 of 6

The Great Conductors - All-Star Extravaganza Edition - Quarter-Finals - Game 1 of 6

The decision to use the word "Great" rather than "Greatest" was intentional.
We are endeavoring to express the perception of "greatness" within this multiplicity of conductors
rather than as a means of identifying and labeling an individual artist.
The intended concept is an attempt to represent and judge those conductors who have elevated craftmanship into true artistry.

The Format -

6 Quarter-Final games of 25 conductors with the 8 receiving the highest point totals from each moving on
to one of two Semi-Final games of 24 with 10 to 12 from each moving on to the Final.

The Rules -

1.) You may vote once per calendar day.

2.) There must be a separation of at least six hours between votes cast on separate calendar days

2.) You will have a total of 20 points to distribute per entry with a maximum of 5 per individual conductor.

3.) Play will end with the first conductor to reach 150 points.

Note: Based upon the number of players, both the Semi-Final and Final games may be increased to 200 points.

I'm just glad that wagering is still prohibited and that the new owners keep turning down my requests to establish "Shaughnessy's Online Gambling Casino" - as I would have lost a packet on this one... The first six were fairly straightforward - no real surprises other than who finished where...

I had Fritz Reiner and Nikolaus Harnoncourt penciled in at the number 7 and 8 slots - Reiner was a "lock" to advance and Harnoncourt was "favoured but vulnerable" - Stanisław Skrowaczewski was the dark horse candidate that I thought most likely to take advantage of anyone in that eighth slot that was kind of shaky points-wise - I remember a 3 month - (which felt like six months) - long period in "Current Listening" which was pretty much "All Skrowaczewski All The Time" - Kind of like "Skrowaczewski-palooza" - but I didn't anticipate his having nearly twice as many points as that mid-level group which just could not break out of the pack - Barenboim, Fricsay, Reiner, Harnoncourt, Inbal - passed over repeatedly as players padded the point totals for conductors who already had insurmountable leads...

Sanderling is the conductor that I underestimated the most - much to my bitter regret - I really should have known better - and I do - and so there's no excuse - I did have him listed in the "Top Ten" at number 11 - ;) - As mentioned, I had Reiner and Harnoncourt in 7th and 8th place, Skrowaczewski in 9th, with Barenboim finishing in 10th...

But it wasn't meant to be... and I'm both wiser (and richer) for it - Cheers!
