I've thought before that Verdi's big three can be considered as three show cases for three different voice types. If we understand the title role to be the main protagonist of the opera in each case then we have a vehicle for a soprano, tenor and baritone respectively. (That's not to say that the other roles aren't important, however.) My choices of recordings all reflect my answer to the question, who were the greatest soprano, tenor and baritone in Italian rep in the second half of the 20th century?

La Traviata (Callas/Valletti/Zanasi/Rescigno) - 1958
Il Trovatore (Corelli/Simionato/Tucci/Merrill/Schippers) - 1964
Rigoletto (Gobbi/Callas/Di Stefano/Serafin) - 1955

I have only one year's listening experience with these three but so far Il Trovatore is the opera I enjoy the most. I'm not qualified to choose best performances. I have just two CDs including the Giuliani complete opera, and a highlights disc of the EMI recording with Corelli.

I'm surprised you prefer Sills over Vicky knowing your preferences, but it's good to get a different perspective.
