The impetus of Art is communication. A novel tells a story that deals with a writer's Weltanschuung . . . and how a main character, with the help of sub-characters, perceives the world. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. A poem does the same thing as the novel but in condensed form which usually revolves around an epiphany or profound metaphor written in a terse, laconic style(modern). Finally, music has a recognizable melody and, usually, accompaniment that portrays human emotion of joy, happiness, sadness, reflection etc. as we see in differing genres of music. So, the question begged is: what is the message of Impressionism that ,in it's truest form, reveals the human soul through, simply, impressions with no real melody or direction? Can one listen to an hour of this type of music and be satisfied? Here's a beautiful rendition of "Claire de Lune" by Pascal Roge. I like the music but what does it say about the artist and how he perceives the world? Did Debussy have a vision of Art and, if so, what did he communicate in his vision?
