Richard Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen (Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester, Sebastian Weigle, Susan Bullock, Lance Ryan, Terje Stensfold et al, Oehms, 14 CD's)

CD's 11-14: Götterdämmerung. Managed to do the Ring (as usual) in Wagner style - one opera a day.

All in all, this is a pretty good Ring. Although not mentioned on the box, these are live recordings, but any audience intrusion and stage sounds are not disturbing. I like the playing and the singing throughout the four operas.
Copy/pasting from the general thread.

It arrived! I'm just sampling every CD now and it sounds incredible! It must just be a coincidence but the sound is better than when I listened to it on YouTube! I love the packaging of it too with every sleeve being a different photo from the production.

Always wanted to hear this one. Got it for a few dollars.
It's very good,a bit faster than i like, but those old voices. Well, you know, they were special.
The sound is good.
After a few minutes you forget it's mono.

I love Fricsay's lighter, more classical approach to Mozart and Beethoven (I have his Giovanni and Fidelio recordings). They very much have a period practice feel to them, you could say he was HIP before it was hip! (And by the way, I'm not saying that he conducted that way because he thought it more authentic, it may just have been his natural way with the music of that era.)

The other thing I would note about this recording is the excellent Queen of the Night of Rita Streich.

Must confess I never warmed to D F-D's Papageno. Far too knowing. The guy is supposed to be a simpleton.

I think he's better on the Böhm, and there you also have Wunderlich's peerless Tamino.
