Love this topic. I'm obsessed with the Ring. I think I have 14 1/2 recordings (Gergiev being the 1/2). I think the three best are Solti, Keilberth 55 and Karajan. I couldn't live without them. Karajan's Walküre is magnificent, Keilberth's cast and conducting is near flawless and Solti's set is magnificent in that it presents the Ring is such a monumental way. I've avoided Krauss due to the sound. Not sure I can handle mono.

Sebastian Weigle. Didn't listen to Haenchen. The first three are all badly sung but only Weigle's conducting and Frankfurt playing are lit.

I haven't heard Young's or Weigle's, but they're both on Spotify.

I've only heard Siegfried from Haenchen's, and it's decent enough to be worth hearing.

The Thielemann Vienna set is pretty dreadful - there's a reason why it's sold for $30. He has the measure of the score, and the orchestra plays magnificently, but the singing is mostly atrocious. If you want a Thielemann RING, you're better off with the Bayreuth set from a few years earlier.

I am in the middle of Haenchen's on DVD and liking it a lot!

Well, I really can't pick a favorite. But out of the 13 complete Rings I own, my top three are Sawallisch 1989, Sawallisch 1968, and Levine 1988.
