Which one(s)? He wrote four.

I have been listening to them interpreted by HIP conductors, Norrington and Gardiner. They make these work sound less long winded and like later Beethoven.

Edit: I see it was just a mistake to not include #4. It happens. Pollin' ain't easy, man!

ArtMusic, #4 is my favorite, one of my all-time favorite works. It's followed fairly closely by his 1st symphony, which as to be one of (if not the) greatest debut symphonies.

OK this has been done before, but I'll say again No 4 it top of the list for me. I also have a high regard for No 2 - maybe because it is so frequently disregarded by many.

My favorite Brahms Symphonies happen to be the best of them, Numbers 1 and 4.

I recommend the Boston Symphony conducted by Charles Munch for each of them.

Munch was known as a French specialist but he was just as great as a conductor of Brahms.

I was going to vote for #4 but then I saw that it wasn't an option. So then I was going to vote for #3 because it's probably my second favorite. But I ended up voting for #2 cause I know it's going to be the undeserved underdog of the poll.

My favorite recordings of my top two, respectively, are Kleiber/Vienna (#4) and Karajan/Berlin (#1)

The Kleiber recording is full of clarity, momentum and energy. The Karajan is powerful and romantic, I've never heard a more convincing 1st Mvt than the way Karajan does it.

I must confess I haven't a great liking for Brahms symphonies. The fourth is probably the one I like best. But they tend to sink under their own weight.
