Hello,

I am trying to identify a chamber piece used in a Columbo episode ("Blueprint for Murder").

You can hear it at
. It only lasts a few seconds. I also am attaching a MP3 (which I sourced from the DVD and should be of better quality).

To me it sounds like the first movement of a classical or early romantic string quartet, but I cannot place it.

Classical music actually features as part of the episode's plot. For the record (because it does not appear documented anywhere else on the Internet), the other pieces featured in the episode are Brahms' Piano Concerto #2, and Mozart's Piano Quartet in G Minor.

Thank you! I'm not familiar with the piece, but I was thrown off nonetheless by the trickery of the sound editor of that episode. In that clip, Columbo is listening to the radio just as a piano concerto ends. Then there is some silence followed by the quartet, leading one to believe it is the very beginning of the piece. But the clip is actually from very late in the exposition, right before the repeat. I think I actually did listen to this piece briefly in my search and should have noticed the theme. I will be filling this hole in my collection immediately.
